The Perfect Plum

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Plums are plentiful at present with many new varieties and old favourites. They are excellent for lunchbox snacks and to add sweetness to baking and salads. For something different, try a plum jam or preserve.

All brightly coloured fruit and vegetables contain antioxidants which boast a multitude of health benefits. Plums contain a certain antioxidant called anthocyanin. This has been attributed to the ‘super fruit’ label given to plums.

Current plum varieties include:

  • Flavour Fall – Dark red to black with a yellow flesh and a medium sized plum. Crisp and sweet with moderate juice.
  • Sugar Plum – Very small oval shaped fruit. A sweet multi-purpose plum. They are great for adding sweetness to recipes and salads and good for desserts. These can be processed into jam and in preserve form.
  • Queen Garnett – Darkens to full black with a small seed and dark purple flesh. Small, medium, and large fruit available and priced by size. Very high in antioxidants and the nectar juice is also available through Fruitlink.
  • Dapple Dandy – Large plum with a red to brown dappled skin and a pink flesh. These are also called ‘Dinosaur Eggs’ due to their distinctive skin colour. They have a spicy sweet taste.
